Why Indexing Errors Hurt Your Rankings
If your pages aren't indexed, they can't rank. Google Search Console (GSC) is the single most important tool for diagnosing why Google is ignoring your URLs. After auditing 100+ websites, the same 6 indexing errors keep appearing — and most are fixable in under an hour.
1. Crawled — Currently Not Indexed
Google crawled the page but chose not to index it. Usually a content-quality or duplication signal. Fixes:
- Expand thin content to 800+ words with original insight
- Add unique title, H1, meta description, and internal links
- Remove near-duplicate pages or consolidate via canonical
- Add structured data (Article, Product, FAQ)
- Request indexing in GSC once content is improved
2. Discovered — Currently Not Indexed
Google knows the URL exists but hasn't crawled it. Crawl-budget problem. Fixes:
- Reduce server response time below 200 ms
- Improve internal linking from high-authority pages
- Submit fresh XML sitemap with priority and lastmod
- Eliminate low-value URLs (tag pages, faceted nav, paginated archives) with noindex
- Build a few quality external links to the orphan section
3. Soft 404
The URL returns 200 but Google thinks the page is empty or error-like. Fixes:
- Make sure "no results" search pages return real 404 status
- Add meaningful content above the fold (don't leave empty containers)
- Block thin auto-generated pages in robots.txt
4. Page With Redirect
Internal links point to redirected URLs. Fixes:
- Update internal links to the final destination
- Fix sitemap entries — only list canonical 200 URLs
- Avoid redirect chains longer than 1 hop
5. Duplicate Without User-Selected Canonical
Google picked a different canonical than you did. Fixes:
- Add explicit <link rel="canonical"> on every page
- Confirm canonical and og:url match the page itself
- Use 301 redirects for true duplicates (HTTP vs HTTPS, www vs non-www, trailing slash)
6. Blocked by robots.txt
Usually accidental. Open /robots.txt and check for stray Disallow: rules. Use the GSC robots.txt tester before redeploying.
7. Server Error (5xx)
Indicates hosting overload or app crashes during Googlebot crawl. Move to a faster host, enable full-page caching, and put Cloudflare in front of origin.
Indexing Recovery Checklist
- Audit every page in GSC → Pages report
- Fix highest-volume errors first
- Resubmit sitemap with only 200-status canonical URLs
- Use URL Inspection → Request Indexing on priority pages
- Monitor weekly for 6 weeks; expect 30-70% recovery rate
