The Real Reason WordPress Sites Are Slow

It's almost never the page builder. It's a combination of cheap shared hosting, 30+ plugins, unoptimized images, and render-blocking scripts. Fix these four and you'll hit 90+ PageSpeed even on Elementor.

    1. Upgrade Your Hosting

    • Move from cheap shared hosting to LiteSpeed VPS, Cloudways, Kinsta, or Rocket.net
    • Use PHP 8.2+ and MariaDB 10.6+
    • Enable OPcache and Redis object cache
    • Target TTFB under 200 ms

    2. Configure Full-Page Caching

    • LiteSpeed hosting → LiteSpeed Cache (free, best option)
    • Other hosts → WP Rocket (paid) or FlyingPress
    • Avoid stacking W3 Total Cache + WP Super Cache — pick one
    • Enable mobile caching separately if you have AMP

    3. Optimize Images Aggressively

    • Convert to WebP or AVIF (ShortPixel, Imagify, Converter for Media)
    • Resize before upload — never load a 4000px image inside a 600px container
    • Native lazy-loading on every img below the fold
    • Preload the hero/LCP image
    • Use srcset for responsive sizes

    4. Eliminate Render-Blocking JS & CSS

    • Defer all non-critical JS
    • Delay loading of analytics, chat, ads until user interaction
    • Inline critical CSS, async load the rest
    • Remove unused CSS with PurgeCSS or WP Rocket's Remove Unused CSS
    • Disable jQuery Migrate if your theme doesn't need it

    5. Audit Your Plugins

The 80/20: usually 3-4 plugins cause 80% of the slowness. Use Query Monitor to find heavy ones. Common offenders: page builders, multi-purpose themes, social share plugins, related-post plugins, contact form plugins loading on every page.

    6. Cloudflare + Optimization Settings

    • Enable Cloudflare proxy (orange cloud)
    • Turn on Brotli, Auto Minify, Rocket Loader (test first)
    • Set Browser Cache TTL to 1 year for static assets
    • Enable Tiered Caching and Argo if budget allows

    7. Database Cleanup

    • Delete post revisions older than 30 days
    • Empty trash, spam comments, transients
    • Optimize tables with WP-Optimize

    Expected Results

Following this checklist, a typical WordPress site goes from 28-45 PageSpeed to 90-100 mobile, with LCP under 2.0s and CLS under 0.05. Get a WordPress speed audit if you want it done for you.
