WooCommerce Has a Performance Reputation Problem
It's not deserved if you set it up correctly. The default install ships with cart fragments AJAX hammering your server on every page, no object cache, and unoptimized product queries. Fix those and WooCommerce flies.
1. Disable Cart Fragments on Non-Cart Pages
Cart fragments make an admin-ajax.php call on every single page view. On busy stores this kills TTFB. Use the "Disable Cart Fragments" snippet or a plugin like Perfmatters to disable on non-cart/non-checkout pages.
2. Object Caching With Redis
- Install Redis on your VPS (most managed hosts include it)
- Enable WooCommerce object caching — reduces DB queries 60-80%
- Use the Redis Object Cache plugin or LiteSpeed Cache built-in
3. Shop & Category Page Optimization
- Cache shop and category pages aggressively (1-6 hours)
- Show 12-24 products per page maximum
- Use AJAX add-to-cart sparingly
- Lazy-load product images
4. Product Page Speed
- Preload the first product gallery image
- Defer related-products query or replace with manual cross-sells
- Remove unused product tabs (Reviews if you have none, Additional Info if empty)
- Use Product schema for richer SERPs
5. Checkout Optimization
- Use checkout-block based One Page Checkout
- Remove unnecessary fields (company, address line 2 for digital products)
- Inline Stripe/PayPal scripts only on checkout page
- Disable Order Notes if not used
6. Database Maintenance for WooCommerce
- Delete old orders/customers per GDPR retention policy
- Clean expired transients weekly
- Add database indexes on heavy meta queries
- Switch to HPOS (High-Performance Order Storage) — built-in WooCommerce 8.2+
7. Plugins to Remove Today
Slider Revolution (replace with native), heavy social-share plugins, "smart" related products, abandoned cart plugins that scan on every load, multi-currency plugins (use Markets/Shopify Markets equivalent or native rates).
